I have always loved working in the public sector. I love the rush of the morning ward round, the joy of learning and teaching medicine, the challenge of collaboration and making a difference in the lives of people, often without other options, who placed their trust in me.
So why did I leave? The main reason was that I desired flexibility in my working hours following the birth of my little boy. I had no experience of private practice (having never even done a locum before) and I always feared that the experience would be all-consuming and all about the money. So I was quite amazed when I realised that I loved private practice so much.I have my own office
It’s beautiful and bright and exactly what I love. It is a comfortable space that I enjoy working in and a safe haven for those who enter seeking medical help, directions or a seat for a few seconds on the soft comfy sofas.
My schedule is flexible
I see patients by appointment and although there are often a few emergency consults that slip in during the day I’m able (by and large) to plan my day.
On schedule (most of the time)
The only meetings I need to attend are the ones I schedule or ones that are scheduled by other people who run on tight schedules. No time wasted. No bureaucracy. I love efficiency!
Patient care
I can get my patients what they need and most often when they need it. I work with great colleagues who are vibrant, well-read and eager to help. If my patient needs an investigation there’s very little delay. The laboratory is helpful and communicative. The radiology service is accommodating and radiologists are skilled. If my patients require interventions there is always an available helping hand.
Reward
A diagnosis can usually be made. A proper one. And usually in time to offer a good treatment plan. Drugs that I need are usually available and if they’re not an alternative can be found. There is nothing better than this for a physician!
Communication
Communication is key. It makes me feel like I’m a valued member of a well-functioning team. Doctors, nurses, the allied health care team, pathology, radiology, pharmacy, hospital management… I could go on and on! Everyone communicates. And not just a “I’ve sent an email and now my job’s done” kind of communication, but a kind of communication that results in clarity and positive outcomes.
